PGA Tour stars were united in their surprise at the news that Phil Mickelson and caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay had split after a successful 25-year partnership.

The shock announcement was made shortly after last week's US Open, which Mickelson opted to miss as the opening round in Erin Hills clashed with his daughter's high-school graduation.

Mickelson hired Mackay as his caddie shortly after turning professional in 1992, and the pair enjoyed 41 PGA Tour victories, five major championship titles and 11 consecutive Ryder Cups together.

However, the left-hander has not won since his memorable Open victory at Muirfield in 2013, and the pair have mutually decided to part company with Mickelson's brother, Tim, taking over on the bag for the remainder of the season.
