Jason Day continued his sensational form with a 10-under-par 61 to take the first-round lead in the BMW Championship in Illinois.
Day, who won the 97th PGA Championship last month, was sitting on 10 under with one hole to play and facing a 44-yard eagle attempt on the par-four ninth for a round of 59 when the threat of electrical activity in the area forced play to be suspended late on Thursday evening.
When the players returned to the course on Friday morning, he left his pitch from the lush rough short and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt as he recorded only a par and failed to become the seventh player in PGA Tour history to card a 59.
After starting at the 10th at the Conway Farms Golf Club, Day opened with back-to-back birdies on Thursday and was on four under when he made his sole bogey at his eighth hole.
But that setback was only a brief one as the Australian proceeded to pick up five shots in his next four holes, including an eagle at his 10th hole when he holed from a fairway bunker.
Further birdies followed at his 16th and 17th holes of the day and Day gave himself the 59 chance by smashing a huge drive down his last hole.
Day holds a four-stroke lead over Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth, who was in the same group and managed to birdie the ninth for a 65.
The American was also boosted by a hole in one on his 11th hole of the day after struggling through the first 10 in level par.
Spieth followed up his ace with back-to-back birdies and picked up one more shot at his 16th.
His compatriot Daniel Berger also shot a 65 after producing a flying finish - he was two under with three to play before a birdie-birdie-eagle finish, capped by holing his approach from the fairway on the ninth.
The duo were later joined in a share of second place on six under by Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson as the first round was completed.
Day and Spieth are battling to knock Rory McIlroy off the No 1 spot in the world rankings, and the Northern Irish player also started the tournament in positive fashion.
McIlroy finished on three-under 68 after completing his round which left him alongside the likes of Zach Johnson and Phil Mickelson after 18 holes.
But Jim Furyk, who carded a 59 in this tournament two years ago, managed to play only six holes before withdrawing with a wrist injury which has his participation in the Tour Championship and Presidents Cup in doubt.
