Rory McIlroy enjoys much-needed break ahead of US Open

Rory McIlroy insists he has no concerns over his game after enjoying a well-earned break ahead of next week's US Open.

McIlroy endured a run of five straight competitive weeks, winning the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship and the Wells Fargo Championship before returning to the UK and missing the cut in the last two events of the run.

The world No 1 made an early exit in the defence of his BMW PGA Championship title at Wentworth, and he then failed to break 80 in the first round of the Irish Open - where he was tournament host - and again failed to make the weekend.

But McIlroy now feels refreshed before he heads to Chambers Bay for the second major of the year, and he is not dwelling on his disappointing performances at Wentworth and Royal County Down.

"Personally, I didn't really look much into what happened those last two events," he said. "I'm just concentrating on what I really need to do well leading into next week. I think I can put the last two tournaments down to a little bit of fatigue.

"I didn't touch a golf club last week. I played five weeks in a row, and mentally I was ready to have a little bit of a break. Just got away from it."

The 26-year-old will play his first practice round on Saturday at Chambers Bay, a course that has been compared to the Congressional Country Club - the venue for McIlroy's record-breaking US Open victory in 2011.

Rory McIlroy set a scoring record as he blitzed Congressional and the rest of the field on the way to his first major.

"It's a bit of an unknown for everyone, Chambers Bay," he added. "From what I've heard, it's going to be sort of different."

McIlroy will play alongside defending champion Martin Kaymer and US Amateur champion Gunn Yang for the first two rounds in Washington, starting at 4.28pm (BST) on Thursday.
