Paul McGinley confident Rory McIlroy has what it takes at Augusta

Paul McGinley says Rory McIlroy must ‘forget about history’ when he plays at Augusta National this week.

The world No 1 from Northern Ireland is hoping to complete a career grand slam with victory in The Masters – having already won the US Open, The Open and PGA Championship.

To date, only Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have achieved this feat.

And if Rory were to win this week, he would become the second youngest golfer to do so after Woods.

Woods was 24 when he completed the set in 2000, McIlroy is currently 25.

McGinley, last year’s successful Ryder Cup winning skipper, told Sky Sports News HQ:  “The more he doesn’t think about it the better.

“He must disconnect from history and the better chance he has of winning.”
