Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson is not surprised that Tiger Woods will make a return to action at next week’s Masters – and thinks the former world No 1 will be competitive at Augusta.
Woods announced on Friday that he will end a nine-week absence from the PGA Tour by featuring in the opening major of the year, his first appearance since pulling out 11 holes into the Farmers Insurance Open with a back injury.
The withdrawal followed a career-worst round at the Phoenix Open, but Mickelson feels the world No 104 has had enough time to rectify his short game and injury issues.
"He's had such a good short game and such a great game throughout his career, I think it's going to be an easy fix," Mickelson said. "I think his game will be sharp.
“That (the Masters) is a tough tournament to miss. I just don't think anybody would miss it if they were in it, if they were physically able to play."
Big boost
Woods’ decision to return to Augusta, where the 14-time major winner last won a decade ago, sparked immediate reaction on social media from fans and players alike.
Defending FedEx Cup champion Billy Horschel tweeted: “@TheMasters isn't the same without @TigerWoods. Glad to see him back playing again. Going to be an electrifying week as always! #cantwait"
Horschel’s comments were echoed by Ian Poulter, who posted: “Was it ever really in doubt. Best show on earth just got better."
