The world No 4 began his bid for a fifth major title with an opening-round 72, leaving him nine strokes off early leader Brooks Koepka, only to slip further down the leaderboard in record-breaking fashion on Friday morning.

Beginning on the back nine alongside Phil Mickelson and Jason Day, McIlroy sprayed his opening tee shot into rough and needed four shots to find the green on his way to a double-bogey six.

McIlroy found a fairway bunker off the next tee and the missed his 10-footer to save par, before clearing the 12th green with a sand wedge and then fluffing a chip from the rough on his way to another double-bogey.

Playing the first three holes in five over was McIlroy's worse opening three holes in a major round and dropped him to seven over for the tournament, leaving him in danger of missing the cut for the first time since the 2018 US Open.
