Marc Leishman was finally caught at the top of the AT&T Byron Nelson leaderboard as he ended the third round tied for the lead with Aaron Wise.
Leishman had been the man to catch since his outstanding 10-under 61 on Thursday, but after adding a second-round 66 the Australian was reeled in by Wise as scores soared in blustery conditions at Trinity Forest near Dallas.
Wise began day three one shot off the pace, but four birdies in a front-nine 34 lifted him into the outright lead at the turn as Leishman hit back from a bogey at the second with a birdie at the fourth followed by five straight pars.
Leishman then reclaimed the advantage with two good putts for birdie from 12-foot range on the 14th and 15th greens, only for Wise to respond with back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17.
But the pair will start the final round on 17 under after Leishman made a cast-iron four at the last, ranked the toughest on the course, while Wise's hopes of a maiden PGA Tour title took a hit when he pushed his approach and then three-putted from 40 feet.
The American's late mistake saw him settle for a 68 against Leishman's 69, and the leading pair opened up a four-shot advantage over the chasing pack, led by another Aussie-American combination in Matt Jones and Kevin Na.
Jones kept a bogey off his four-birdie card until he also needed three putts to get down at the last in a solid 68, while Na followed a steady outward half with four birdies and three dropped shots in an erratic back nine as he fired a 69.
Former PGA champion Jimmy Walker, runner-up at last week's Players Championship, continued his encouraging challenge before slipping six strokes off the lead with a costly lapse at the 54th hole.
Walker's birdies at 14 and 15 got him to within two shots of the lead at the time, but he pulled his final tee shot way left and into a tough lie on a sand-covered mound, from where he could only advance his ball 50 yards up the fairway.
He knocked an excellent third to 15 feet, but he raced his par putt five feet past the cup and missed the return, the disappointing six adding up to a round of 70 which left Walker in a share of fifth with Brian Gay (72).
Adam Scott dropped out of contention on nine under after mixing three bogeys with two birdies in a 72, while Trinity Forest member Jordan Spieth is also out of the running following another frustrating performance on the greens - a 71 leaving him 10 strokes behind the leaders.
