Jason Day made an uncharacteristic mistake with his putter during a surprise defeat to Jason Dufner at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.
The Australian suffered a 3&1 loss against the 42nd seed at Austin Country Club, where Day seemed in control of the contest until a putting blunder midway through the front nine.
Looking to follow on from his 4&2 win over James Hahn on Wednesday, Day got off to a fast start and moved two ahead by following a two-putt birdie at the first with a 35-foot gain at the fourth.
Day found the front edge of the par-five sixth green in two and was lining up a long-range look at eagle, only to completely misjudge his effort over the ridge and knock his putt off the green in to rough.
With Dufner finding the putting surface in three and rolling home from 15 feet for the first of back-to-back birdies, Day pitched out of the thick grass and two-putted for an untimely bogey.
