Justin Thomas ended his final round at the WGC-Mexico Championship with a superb eagle on the 18th green.

Justin Thomas produced a shot-of-the-year candidate as he completed his final round in the WGC-Mexico Championship with an eagle two at the par-four 18th.

The world No 3 found the middle of the fairway with his tee shot and his approach from 118 yards landed four yards past the pin before spinning back into the hole.

The eagle took Thomas to 16 under for the tournament and two shots clear of the field at the time, although he eventually lost out to Phil Mickelson in a play-off.

Thomas was also bouncing back from a bogey at the par-three 17th which looked to have dented his chances of victory and back-to-back successes after last week's win in the Honda Classic.

The 24-year-old American had struggled in the opening two rounds in Mexico City and was 11 shots off the lead at level par at the halfway stage.

But he stormed into contention with a course-record 62 on Saturday and the eagle gave him a seven-under 64 in the final round for a 16-under total of 268.
