Adam Scott needed something inspirational to boost his chances of making the cut at the Genesis Open, so holing a putt for eagle from over 75 feet was the ideal tonic.
The smooth-swinging Aussie looked destined to have the weekend off at Riviera Country Club after he began his second round with four bogeys in seven holes to slump to five over for the tournament - four shots outside the projected cut line.
But Scott picked up a welcome birdie at the 18th - his ninth - before finding the green in two at the par-five first hole, although he would have been happy with two putts for birdie as he was 76 feet, seven inches from the cup.
However, Scott judged the pace and line to perfection and prompted rapturous applause from outside the ropes as his ball dropped for a sensational eagle-three, giving him the lift he needed to extend his week.
But as long as Scott's putt was, it was still almost 15 feet shy of the incredible effort holed by Jordan Spieth at last month's Sony Open in Hawaii, one of the longest putts ever recorded on the PGA Tour.
