Tiger Woods was remarkably close to making a hole-in-one on his return to action at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Woods was one over par after 15 holes in his first round in a full-field PGA Tour event for 12 months, but he came within inches of getting under the card with one good swing at the 16th on the South Course at Torrey Pines.

Opting for a six-iron at the tricky 190-yard par-three, Woods took an aggressive line as he sent his ball straight at the front-left pin, and it just had enough air-time to clear the rough.

After taking a soft bounce on the front of the putting surface, his ball rolled slowly towards the target but missed the hole by a matter of inches, leaving Woods the easiest of tap-in birdies.
