Thomas Bjorn's Europe win EurAsia Cup with dominant singles performance

Europe won the EurAsia Cup with a dominant singles display to prevent Asia securing a surprise success in Kuala Lumpur.

Asia, aiming to secure the title for the first time in the events third edition, led 6½-5½ going into the final day's 12 singles matches but were overpowered by their European counterparts, who eventually ran out 14-10 winners.

Thomas Bjorn's side put blue on the board early doors - winning seven of their first eight matches - and claimed eight points from the 12 singles matches, with Asia securing three wins and the remaining match finishing all square.

Thomas Pieters, who impressed on his Ryder Cup debut at Hazeltine in 2016, secured the winning point, with four matches still on the course, for the Europeans on the 18th hole as a par proved enough for victory over Byeong Hun An.

The big-hitting Belgian began the match in strong fashion winning four of the opening six holes but An responded in fashion to level the match on the 14th green before winning back-to-back holes only for the Korean golfer to take the match down the last after making birdie at the par-three 17th.

Alex Noren claimed a commanding 4&2 win, which never looked in doubt after the Swede hit the turn 3up, in the lead match over Nicholas Fung before Rafa Cabrera Bello secured the second point of the day with a resounding 4&3 success over the previously unbeaten Gavin Green.

Race to Dubai champion Tommy Fleetwood underlined his credentials with a determined 2&1 victory over S.S.P. Chawrasia to make it three wins in a row this week.

Poom Saksansin earned Arjun Atwal's Asia side their first point of the day with an impressive one-hole success over Europe's most experienced player Paul Casey despite the Englishman carding a four-under bogey free round but Henrik Stenson maintained Europe's grip on proceedings with a battling 2&1 win over Hideto Tanihara.

Bernd Wiesberger and Alexander Levy, hoping to impress Bjorn ahead of the Ryder Cup at Le Golf National in September, then secured their first victories of the event with 2&1 and 3&1 victories over Phachara Khongwatmai and Kiradech Aphibarnrat respectively before Pieters claimed the winning point.

Tyrrell Hatton completed a successful EurAsia Cup debut with a third victory on the bounce as the Englishman overcame the experienced Anirban Lahiri before countryman Matthew Fitzpatrick was forced to halve his contest with Sunghoon Kang.

Asia finished the day with victories in the final two matches as Yuta Ikeda - the only Asia player to win all his matches - and Haotong Li - unbeaten during the week - defeated British Masters champion Paul Dunne.
