George Coetzee believes an extended break he took following The Open has "refreshed" his outlook after posting an impressive seven-under 63 in the opening round of the British Masters.
The South African carded five birdies, one eagle and a solitary bogey to move into the lead during the first round at Close House.
Coetzee, who enjoyed a top-10 finish at last week's Portugal Masters, continued his strong recent form with a blemish- free front nine which included a three at the par five sixth before coming in with a further four gains and a sole blemish at the 16th.
"It is strange how golf works," Coetzee said. "Sunday I played unbelievable (at the Portugal Masters) and shot level par. Today I didn't play that well - hit four good shots and I was five-under for those four shots.
"I guess it's that bit of momentum from playing well the last couple of weeks and then capitalising on the good ones that I hit today.
"I have had quite a long break since The Open - I took seven weeks off and went and worked on my game. So I feel quite refreshed and know what I am working on.
"I am keeping it simple, I came out prepared and my routine is set so I am not coming out on tour and searching for stuff because that is usually the killer."
