Jack Nicklaus believes the Presidents Cup is close to gaining the level of prestige afforded to the Ryder Cup

Jack Nicklaus believes the Presidents Cup is close to gaining the level of prestige afforded to the Ryder Cup.

The match pits a USA team against an International team and this year it will be held at Liberty National in New Jersey.

The United States have won nine of the 11 biennial contests to date and the last six in succession following a tie in 2003, with the International Team's only success coming in Australia in 1998.

Players such as FedEx Cup champion Justin Thomas, world No 1 Dustin Johnson, Open champion Jordan Spieth and US Open winner Brooks Koepka will be among the Americans' star-studded line-up, and Nicklaus feels the competition is rapidly growing in stature.

"I think the Presidents Cup is catching the Ryder Cup in many ways," he said. "The Ryder Cup is a great event which encompasses just the United States and Europe.

"The Presidents Cup encompasses the whole world with the exception of Europe so the potential for that is probably as good or greater than the Ryder Cup, although both are great events.

"Both have their place in the game of golf and I think we're going to have a good match here this week.

"I think the American team is as strong as it has been for a long time, so I'm interested to see what goes on and what happens."
