Sergio Garcia damaged his putter in a petulant outburst at TPC Boston and then putted with a fairway-wood, a driver and a three-iron during his torrid third-round 75.

Sergio Garcia tumbled down the leaderboard after damaging his putter in a fit of anger during the third round of the Dell Technologies Championship.

Garcia lost his temper after leaving an eagle putt woefully short on the fourth green at TPC Boston, and he took a petulant swipe at a sprinkler head in the fringe which resulted in his putter being bent out of shape.

Under the rules of golf, he was unable to continue using the putter or have it replaced as it was not damaged during the normal course of play, so he opted to putt with a three-wood and the move proved initially successful as he rolled in a birdie from 13 feet.

But after bogeys at the fifth and sixth, the Masters champion switched to putting with a driver, although he missed from three feet for par at the eighth before dropping his fourth shot in five holes at the ninth after an incredible lip-out from barely a foot.

Sergio Garcia finds putting with a driver a tough challenge as he lips out from barely a foot to drop his fourth shot in five holes in the third round.

The Spaniard then chose to go with a three-iron on the back nine, and he found that more to his liking as he holed from 12 feet for birdie at the 13th and found the cup again with a good stroke at 17.

However, after playing so well to get back to level par for the tournament, Garcia inexplicably hit a tree with his third to the par-five final hole which resulted in his ball dropping straight down into the hazard well short of the green, and he then missed the green from the drop zone before getting up and down to limit the damage to a seven.
