Defending champion Jason Day believes the Players Championship has the credentials to be added to golf’s list of majors.
The PGA Tour's flagship event is frequently dubbed as golf's unofficial "fifth major", with 48 of the world's top 50 scheduled to feature at TPC Sawgrass this week.
Day claimed a wire-to-wire win in last year's event as he finished four strokes clear of the chasing pack, with the world No 3 holding the tournament in high regard.
"It feels like a major to me," Day told Sky Sports News HQ. "I'm sure if you go ahead and ask a lot of the other players they would say the same.
"It's a pretty huge event for not just me but for everyone else that's playing. It's pretty special to me and hopefully one day it becomes a major."
The Australian had a poor record in the event prior to last year's victory, missing the cut in three of his previous five appearances in the event.
"I knew how tough the competition was and knew how big the tournament was, but didn't really pay attention to it until I won last year," Day added.
"I sat there and thought to myself that it was a pretty big accomplishment, to be able to go from where I was and not really performing very well in this tournament to winning it."
