The 40-year-old, who holds an impressive four-stroke lead after 18 holes of the 81st Masters, is a four-time winner on the PGA Tour.

In two weeks' time the California-born pro, who was one of only two players to break 70, will head to San Antonio to defend his Valero Texas Open title.

On Thursday, his opening 65 at Augusta National - where testing conditions saw winds gust up to 40mph - was one of the best Masters rounds in recent years.

Hoffman also has a decent Masters record having finished inside the top 30 in all three previous appearances.

Two years ago he made another strong start at Augusta National, when his opening round of 67 left him in a tie for second behind eventual champion Jordan Spieth.

On that occasion, Hoffman went on to finish in a tie-for-9th - his best finish at a major - and later that year reached a career-high 31 in the World Ranking. He currently stands at No 52.

Whether he goes on to wear the green jacket in 2017 remains to be seen but, make no mistake, Hoffman is certainly no rookie so don't be surprised if he is still in contention come Sunday afternoon.
