Rory McIlroy unwittingly endangered spectators when he unleashed a monster 410-yard drive during his opening match of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.
McIlroy was one down to Soren Kjeldsen when he arrived at the 578-yard par-five 12th, where fans and officials in golf carts were crossing the fairway some 390 yards from the tee and deemed to be out of range.
But the 2015 champion nailed his drive straight down the middle, and his ball narrowly missed one pedestrian and hopped in front of a buggy before finally coming to rest, leaving him just a short-iron for his second.
Kjeldsen flushed his drive as well, although his ball finished around 80 yards behind his opponent, and McIlroy knocked his second to 30 feet and two-putted for a winning birdie that levelled the contest.
McIlroy also birdied the next to take the lead, but Kjeldsen reeled off four consecutive birdies to claim a notable 2&1 victory over the second seed.
However, as huge as McIlroy's drive at the 12th was, it was beaten by Jon Rahm late in the day as the Spaniard crushed a 416-yard rocket in his clash against Kevin Chappell.
