Swafford recovered from an opening-hole bogey to post a five-under 67 on the Stadium Course at La Quinta, seeing him finish one stroke clear of overnight leader Adam Hadwin.

Brian Harman and one-time leader Bud Cauley claimed a share of third, with Dominic Bozzelli a further stroke back after closing his one-under 71 with back-to-back birdies.

Beginning the final round two strokes off the pace, Swafford slipped further adrift with a three-putt bogey at the first but responded with a hat-trick of gains from the seventh.

Hadwin struggled to replicate his third-round 59 as he reached the turn level-par, as Cauley moved out ahead by following a hole-out eagle from the 10th fairway with a gain at the 14th.

Back-to-back birdies from the 11th gave Harman a share of the advantage, with Swafford rolling in a 12-footer at the 15th to make it a three-way tie at the top.

Swafford moved in to the outright lead with a two-putt birdie at the 16th and briefly doubled his advantage at the next when his tee shot left a tap-in, only for Hadwin to drain a 25-footer at the 17th to stay within one.

Hadwin, needing a birdie at the last, sent his approach in to the bunker and could only get up-and-down for par, leaving Swafford two putts for victory.

This is a dream come true," Swafford said. "I really didn't get ahead of myself, didn't really look at leaderboards, didn't really know where I was."

A round-of-the-day 65 saw Patrick Reed end the week in a share of 12th alongside Francesco Molinari, with England's Greg Owen part of the group a further shot adrift.
