Matt Fitzpatrick comes agonisingly close to an ace in Abu Dhabi, but his caddie points out there was no prize anyway!

Matt Fitzpatrick was a whisker away from celebrating the first hole-in-one of his professional career, but his caddie insisted he did not want the ball to drop on that hole as there was no prize!

Fitzpatrick was enjoying a solid first round at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and was one under for the day when he teed up at the 199-yard par-three seventh - his 16th hole.

With Sky Sports commentator Rich Beem lavishing praise on Fitzpatrick's swing, the young Englishman made perfect connection with a five-iron and stared it down in flight.

His ball was bang on line and pitched on the front of the green before rolling ominously towards the cup, but despite catching plenty of the left side of the cup, it refused to drop and performed a 90-degree lip-out.

"He was robbed", said Beem as Fiztpatrick failed to hide his disappointment at missing out on a hole-in-one, but his caddie, Jamie Lane, was quick to offer words of consolation.

"There's no car on this hole, so you didn't want it to go in anyway," said Lane.

"Good point", replied Fitzpatrick, who tapped in for birdie and picked up another shot at the ninth to post a three-under 69.
