Rory McIlroy powered to his first PGA Tour victory in 16 months at TPC Boston as a final-round 65 earned him an impressive two-shot win at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
McIlroy was six shots behind 54-hole leader Paul Casey overnight, but he cruised to the turn in just 31 blows with five birdies, including three in a row from the seventh.
He added another at the 12th to go two clear of the faltering Casey, and he hit back from his lone bogey at 17 with a superb up-and-down from sand at the last to secure the third FedExCup Play-Off title of his career, and his first since 2012.
All aspects of his game were in fine order despite the windy conditions, with his sublime bunker skills setting up three of his birdies, while he enjoyed a significant improvement in his putting.
McIlroy has been frequently let down by his touch on the greens this year, and he described his putting as "pathetic" after he missed the cut at the PGA Championship in July.
But he ended the week in Boston ranked first in three key areas - putting average, putts per GIR and birdies made.
