The USGA are accused of ruining the end of the women's U.S. Open, just three weeks after having a similar problem at the men's event

Anna Nordqvist suffered a dramatic two-shot penalty in the US Open play-off, the second time in less than a month a contender in a major USGA event has suffered a penalty infringement.

In the men's US Open at Oakmont in June, Dustin Johnson was slapped with a one-shot penalty after his ball moved while he addressed it on the fifth green, although the American went on to win the tournament.

But Nordqvist was not so lucky when she was handed a two-shot penalty following a bunker infringement during the women's US Open on Sunday.

On the second play-off hole in California, the 29-year-old Swede's 5-iron brushed against the sand as she addressed the ball in a fairway bunker.

This left the USGA with no choice but to give her a two-stroke penalty which ultimately cost her the opportunity to win the most important title in women's golf.

The trophy was ultimately lifted by Brittany Lang who made pars on each of the three play-off holes, while Nordqvist suffered a bogey on 18 which - added to her penalty misfortune - meaning she lost the play-off by three shots.
