Greg Chalmers earned himself an Open exemption on Sunday after winning the Barracuda Championship by six points at Montreux in Reno.
The Australian world number 490, who was leading by six points heading into the last day, carded a nervy four-point final round to secure his first ever win on the PGA tour win with a 43-point score.
Gary Woodland finished second on the scenic course, which uses the Stableford scoring system, on 37 points while his compatriot Colt Knost finished third with 35 points.
Woodland was on course to challenge for victory but a three-putt bogey on the 18th ended the American's chances, shortly before Chalmers secured the win with an eagle putt on the final hole.
"I thought I was in trouble," Chalmers said. "I thought Gary birdied the last hole and then I crushed the driver. The best shot, the only good shot I hit all day."
Victory for Chalmers is his first on the PGA tour in 386 attempts and secures the 42-year-old a spot at the Open at Royal Troon later this month, live on Sky Sports
"In golf you always have to think something good is around the corner," said the Australian, who also receives a two-year exemption on the tour.
"I thought my game was close. Today was a battle but the first three rounds I played really well."
