Watch Greg Owen save a drowning baby bird during his practice round at TPC Sawgrass for the Players Championship

Greg Owen went to extraordinary lengths to rescue a baby bird from drowning in alligator-infested waters at TPC Sawgrass.

The veteran golfer was on the 16th hole playing alongside American Ryder Cup star Brandt Snedeker in a practice round ahead of this week's star-studded Players Championship when they noticed the small blue jay in distress.

Owen decided the only course of action was to strip down to his underpants and, ignoring the threat of large reptiles, wade into the water to perform the rescue. The incident was captured on video by his coach, Tony Ziegler.

Posting the clip on Ziegler Golf School's Facebook page, he said: "Working with Greg Owen during his practice round at TPC Sawgrass for the Players Championship. Walking off the 16th tee with Greg and Brandt Snedeker when a baby blue jay falls out of a tree, tries to fly across a pond only to make it half way across.

"What does the 6ft 5in, 210lb big man do? Jump in and save the bird of course!! ‪#‎bigheart‬ ‪#‎animallover‬"
