Colin Montgomerie believes Rory McIlroy is the favourite for Masters victory after the world No 3 rallied to finish his second round strongly at Augusta.

McIlroy, who could complete the Grand Slam with victory this week, recovered from a slow start to fire three birdies along his closing stretch to move within one of overnight leader Jordan Spieth.

That late run closed a one-under 71 to lift McIlroy up in to outright second, setting up a third-round shoot-out against the defending champion, and Montgomerie expects the momentum to be with the Northern Irishman.

"He was three under from the 11th tee onward and no one was like that all day," Montgomerie told Sky Sports. "Everyone was making mistakes on that back nine apart from Rory McIlroy.

"He has come right back in to this with vengeance. I think at one stage he was eight shots behind and now there's one. That's massive and you've got to think with momentum playing such a big part in tournaments McIlroy is your favourite."
