Lexi Thompson held her nerve over the closing holes in South Korea to claim a one-stroke victory in the Hana Bank Championship.

The 20-year-old American posted a three-under-par 69 in the fourth round, which was highlighted by a hat-trick of birdies from the seventh hole.

Her nearest challengers were Yani Tseng of Taiwan and Korean Sung Hyun Park, who fired rounds of 68 and 71 respectively.

Park had been one of two joint overnight leaders, while compatriot Amy Yang carded a best-of-day 62 to finish two shots behind champion Thompson.

Yang came home in just 27 strokes, after making birdies on all nine holes at the Ocean Course in Incheon.

She became the first player in LPGA Tour history to close with nine straight birdies, while equalling the record score for either the front or back nine. It also tied the course record set by Sung Hyun Park on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Lydia Ko missed the chance to take over from Korean Inbee Park at the top of the world ranking.

The teenage New Zealander had teed off on Sunday in a tie for the lead, only to shoot a level par round of 72 which combined three birdies with as many bogeys.

However, she could still have regained the No 1 ranking had she holed an eight-foot birdie putt at 18 to grab a share of second spot.

As for winner Thompson, it was her second triumph of the year and sixth overall and she said: "It's very satisfying.

"I always look forward to coming back to South Korea and playing in front of these amazing fans. I love this course. It's a great golf course. Getting a win, it means so much."

At the closing hole, Thompson needed a par five for victory but endured a nervy finale when her second shot ended up in deep rough left of the green. From there she flopped out to 12 feet and two-putted for the win.

The LPGA Tour continues its Asian swing next week with a tournament in Taiwan.
