Colin Montgomerie reflects on the opening day of the Masters

Colin Montgomerie

Colin Montgomerie is confident that fellow Scot Stephen Gallacher will enjoy a positive week at the Masters and explains why the majority of the field at Augusta have a relaxed nature about them.

I was encouraged by Stephen Gallacher's performance in the first round, a 71 is a nice start for him.

He had a good Masters debut last year, and he's just a very solid performer. Playing in the majors and the Ryder Cup will have given him good confidence coming here.

He'll do well this week I think, and anything under par today is very good.

A lot has been made about how relaxed most of the players are when they arrive at Augusta. Tiger Woods, in particular, has been in very good spirits all week.

The Masters - Live

It's been around eight months since the last major, and almost everyone has arrived at Augusta in a relaxed mood. But they all enjoy this, and the anticipation of coming here.

If you can't get yourself upbeat for the Masters, then there's something wrong. This is the ultimate challenge for the players.

Young Scottish amateur Bradley Neil is making his Augusta debut this week at the tender age of 19, and I wish him well.

He's a confident young man, and he needs to be to play here. He's obviously wanting to win the amateur medal, but you have to play four rounds for that.

But there's not many British amateurs over the last 25 years that have made the cut at the Masters. The build-up is huge, and then you stand on the first tee and it suddenly hits you that this is for real.

Whether you have practised well or not, it doesn't matter once you step on to that first tee on Thursday morning.

Good luck to him. He found it difficult today and shot 78, but he can still make it to the weekend.
