Ian Poulter looks back at the 2004 Open, when he wore his daring Union Flag trousers, and discusses his struggle with arthritis

Ian Poulter reflects on the opening two rounds of The 145th Open and looks back on his time in the Sky Sports commentary team at Royal Troon.

We have seen a tale of two very different days, where the weather was great on Thursday and nowhere near as good on Friday.

The 145th Open

The sun was shining and there wasn't much wind for the first, so the guys were able to take advantage of that and Phil Mickelson went on to shoot the round of the day to lead by three.

The players then came out in blustery conditions for their second rounds and the wind was blowing slightly, so the guys were certainly tested more and more as the day progressed.

I'd like to have been playing, but my week here at Royal Troon has still been really good. I don't really like to think about what I'm going to do after golf because I think I've still got a lot of good years left in me.

There are a lot of avenues I could possibly go down once you stop playing, as a number of guys have done, but I'm trying to not think what's after golf and instead focusing more on what's about to happen.

Over the past couple of days for Sky Sports I've done some commentary and studio work, plus spent some time in the Open Zone. As I've known most of the guys here for a number of years, it has just been a smooth hop across the rope to get stuck into the TV side of things.

I've enjoyed all of those roles, but of the three I'd probably say I enjoyed the commentary the most, as you can see what's happening and can comment on the players as they go along. When you're in the studio, you don't really know what's coming until David Livingstone passes a question over you.

There's lots of bouncing around the different areas and plenty of hanging around waiting for your times on-air during the two days, but it has been a lot of fun.

I haven't hit many shots in the past eight weeks, but we are planning right now to get back playing again for early October. I haven't chosen an event to play just yet, but that's remaining the goal.
