Henrik Stenson believes he missed too many opportunities after letting his hopes of BMW PGA Championship victory slip away on Sunday.

The Open Champion went in to the final round four strokes off the lead but surged in to contention with four birdies over his opening seven holes, only to make a number of errors during the rest of his round.

Stenson bogeyed the ninth and cancelled back-to-back birdies from the 11th with two blemishes over his next three holes, before a final-hole gain saw him complete a four-under 68.

The Swede finished in third spot - his highest ever at Wentworth - and three shots adrift off compatriot Alex Noren, but was frustrated not to get closer to the top of the leaderboard.

"This was definitely the best chance for me to win this tournament over all the years I've played it," Stenson said. "There was certainly some good stuff in there for sure, but I'm not playing good.

"Too many unforced errors. I'm a little disappointed to not have better than my B or C game, and I certainly paid the price for a couple of errant tee shots today that led to bogeys.

"I made enough putts and made enough birdies, but a couple errant shots certainly cost me. I'm not a big fan of the golf course and have never played that great here."

Back-to-back birdies over the final two holes secured Francesco Molinari a four-under 68 and gave him outright second, with the Italian pleased to continue his impressive record on the West Course.

"It seems that I'm leading almost every year after one or two rounds here," Molinari said. "I'm getting closer and closer. Second is my best finish here, so hopefully I go one better next year.

"I'm happy with my performance today. Obviously Alex did something quite special today, so it was hard to beat really.

"I think all week, unfortunately, I didn't play the front nine, and especially the first few holes, well enough to really give myself a chance to go low under par."
