The Northern Irishman picked up three shots over his final three holes to card a six-under 64 and force a three-man play-off at East Lake, where he faced Ryder Cup hopefuls Ryan Moore and Kevin Chappell.

Moore matched McIlroy over each of the first three additional holes and put pressure on the world No 3 at the next extra hole, which was another visit to the par-four 16th.

The American recovered from missing the green in two to drain a long-range par-save from the left side of the dancefloor, as McIlroy's approach left him 17 feet from the pin.

McIlroy then coaxed his uphill birdie effort in to the heart of the cup to secure the Tour Championship title and $1.5m prize fund, as well as leapfrogging Dustin Johnson in the FedExCup standings to claim the $10m bonus jackpot.
