With just four days to go until the opening men’s major of the year, we continue our countdown of iconic Augusta images with another classic – Greg Norman and Sir Nick Faldo’s touching moment at the finale of the 1996 Masters.
The pair had been involved in one of the most memorable final rounds in major history, where Faldo fired a round-of-the-day 67 to capitalise on Norman's final-round collapse and claim the Green Jacket.
Norman had matched the Augusta course record of 63 during the opening round and continued to extend his lead over the next two days to take a six-stroke advantage into Sunday.
Playing alongside Faldo on the final day, Norman bogeyed the first but was still four clear after seven holes but saw his round quickly unravel along the back nine.
A run of three straight bogeys for Norman from the ninth was followed by a double-bogey at the 12th after ending up in the water, before he found the hazard again on his way to another double-bogey at the 16th.
The Australian eventually signed for a six-over 78 to finish five strokes behind Faldo, who drained a long-range putt at the last to finish the tournament with a birdie.
Norman was quick to congratulate Faldo becoming the seventh European winner in nine years, with the mutual respect between the pair visible as they embraced before walking off the green side-by-side.
