Rory McIlroy narrowly avoided being hit by the tee shot of Emiliano Grillo at the Frys.com Open

Rory McIlroy was fortunate to escape injury when he was almost taken out by a golf ball during the third round of the Frys.com Open.

McIlroy had just chipped from the greenside rough at the driveable par-four 17th at Silverado when a ball struck from the group behind landed inches from his foot and narrowly missed hitting Kyle Reifers.

It transpired that the ball belonged to Emiliano Grillo, who had been given the all-clear to attempt to drive the green in the belief that McIlroy's group had called them up.

McIlroy, who tumbled down the leaderboard with three bogeys in four holes on the back nine, admitted afterwards that the ball missed him "by a couple of inches" before joking: "It would have put me out of my misery to be honest".

But he attached no blame to an apologetic Grillo, adding: "Not his fault. You can't see much from back there."
