Matt Fitzpatrick produced a superb performance at Woburn to win his first professional title at the British Masters supported by Sky Sports, and here we tell you all you need to know about an emerging superstar.
He was the youngest player in the field
Born in September 1994, Fitzpatrick was the youngest player playing in the British Masters. He is 10 months younger than Paul Dunne, who was making just his second start since turning professional after the Walker Cup. The oldest player at Woburn was Miguel Angel Jimenez, who won his first two European Tour titles before Fitzpatrick was born!
He went to the same college as Luke Donald
Fitzpatrick is one of many aspiring British golfers who chose to go through the American college system in order to fine-tune his game. He chose Northwestern University in Chicago, the same college that both Luke Donald and David Lipsky went to. Despite staying just one semester before turning pro, Fitzpatrick played in five collegiate events, winning once and finishing in the top five in three others.
He was the first English winner of the US Amateur in 102 years
Fitzpatrick first came to worldwide prominence in 2013 when he won the prestigious US Amateur Championship at Brookline Country Club. After beating Oliver Goss 4&3 in a 36-hole final, he became the first English winner of the event since Harold Hilton in 1911.
He was once ranked as the world's top amateur
Fitzpatrick's victory in the US Amateur swept him to the top of the world amateur rankings, joining the likes of Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth as players who have been No 1 in the amateur game since the rankings were introduced in 2007.
He's a keen Sheffield United fan
Born in Sheffield in South Yorkshire, Fitzpatrick has long been a supporter of his local team, Sheffield United. The Blades were relegated from the Premier League the season before Fitzpatrick was born and have only made it back into the top flight once in his lifetime, in 2006.
He's one of the most accurate players on the European Tour
Fitzpatrick is currently one of only two players on Tour who rank in the top 10 in both driving accuracy and greens In regulation, the other being South African Thomas Aiken, Fitzpatrick hits more than 70 per cent of fairways and 75 per cent of greens in the required number of shots.
He needed a sponsors' invitation to play the British Masters
Despite enjoying a strong rookie season, Fitzpatrick was the highest-ranked player in the Race To Dubai who did not earn automatic qualification for Woburn. However, the tournament extended an invite and that proved to be one of the most inspired decisions of the week.
His caddie was once banned from Augusta
His US Amateur win earned him an invite to play in the 2014 Masters, but his caddie fell foul of the Augusta National officials during a practice round. Lorne Duncan was suspended from being on Fitzpatrick's bag because he wore sandals - strictly forbidden during the tournament week. Duncan claimed he wore sandals due to a foot problem, but he was cleared to be restored to caddieing duty for the opening round after agreeing to change his footwear.
He was the first player since Bobby Jones to be low amateur at The Open and US Open
Having won the silver medal as leading amateur at the 2013 Open Championship at Muirfield, Fitzpatrick went on to win low amateur honours at the US Open the following year at Pinehurst. In doing so he became the first amateur since Bobby Jones in 1930 to hold both titles at the same time.
He is the youngest player in the top 100 in the world
Following his win at Woburn this week Matthew Fitzpatrick is now the youngest player in the top 100 of the world rankings. He is 401 days younger than world No 1, Jordan Spieth.
He has more top three finishes this season than anyone else
With his memorable British Masters win, Fitzpatrick now has more top three finishes than anyone else on the European Tour in 2015. Fitzpatrick has earned a podium finish five times, while Danny Willett, Bernd Wiesberger and David Howell all have four top-three finishes.
