Fleetwood double sends Exeter second
Exeter moved up to second place in League Two as Stuart Fleetwood's brilliant double sealed a 2-1 win over play-off chasing Dagenham & Redbridge.
Fleetwood struck twice either side of Ben Strevens' equaliser as the Grecians made it two home wins in a week after beating Port Vale 1-0 on Tuesday.
They broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when on-loan Charlton striker Fleetwood received the ball 25 yards from goal. He created some space and curled a fine shot with his right foot which beat the outstretched dive of Tony Roberts and nestled in the bottom corner.
Dagenham winger Sam Saunders twice came close to an equaliser before the Daggers drew level on 36 minutes.
It was a poor goal from Exeter's point of view, with Troy Archibald-Henville and goalkeeper Paul Jones leaving a long ball over the top for each other and allowing it to bounce on the edge of the penalty box. Ben Strevens nipped in to pinch the ball and bend it into an open goal.
Paul Tisdale's Exeter won it when there seemed to be no danger as Matt Gill picked the ball up for a throw, but he picked out Fleetwood on the edge of the penalty box and the striker turned sharply before unleashing a stunning, dipping half-volley that flew over Roberts and into the far corner.
