Arsenal's Granit Xhaka got sent off for two bookable offences in Switzerland's 2-0 win over Portugal

Granit Xhaka received an injury-time red card to end a tumultuous international week for the Arsenal midfielder.

Xhaka's Switzerland side impressed in a 2-0 victory over Euro 2016 champions Portugal on Tuesday night, with the Gunners midfielder named in the starting line-up despite a week of uncertainty over his future.

The 23-year-old had been linked with a national switch to newly-recognised FIFA nation Kosovo, but was unsure whether his application to switch nationalities had been successful when both countries attempted to call him up for the latest international fixtures.

After an anxious wait, Xhaka was informed by FIFA that his appearances for Switzerland at the summer's European Championships made him ineligible to play for Kosovo.

"According to an official statement distributed FIFA, we've been informed that if someone played in the European Championships in 2016, they are no longer entitled to play for another national," Xhaka revealed in a statement.

"The Kosovo Football Federation and FIFA do not have a clear agreement on the transfer of players from Switzerland to Kosovo."

It was with this backdrop that Xhaka started against Portugal, and he earned a red card for two sloppy challenges.
