Jordan Pickford will start Sunderland's EFL Cup second-round clash with Shrewsbury as the club awaits news of Vito Mannone's arm injury.
England Under-21 international Pickford would have got the nod anyway, but Max Stryjek is likely to take his place on the bench with Mannone having been sent for X-rays on an elbow problem suffered in training.
Defender John O'Shea (hip) and midfielder Fabio Borini (toe) will miss out as they join Lamine Kone (back), Billy Jones (hip), Jan Kirchhoff (hamstring), Lee Cattermole (hernia surgery) and Sebastian Larsson (knee) on the sidelines
