Revista Predictor: David Garrido off the bottom of the table

Revista Predictor

The #RevistaPredictor has been tamed! David Garrido reports as he, for once, has a good week and the long-time leader now finds himself propping up the experts' table...

What a weekend for the Predictor - two matches where points were so easy to pick up that even I managed it, and then one more that confounded everyone.

MATCH 1 - ALAVES 1-2 VALENCIA

So it's no secret that Valencia have got their act together under Marcelino, but this is still a game they would have lost last season...and in fact did lose back in February, having been ahead until the 78th minute. Not so this time around.

Rightly so, all of the "experts" went for an away victory, but no-one got the exact correct scoreline - six extra points for Jon and Kevin for selecting Simone Zaza as first goalscorer.

It wasn't a bad performance from Alaves, who at least have won one game under Gianni De Biasi, but after Malaga picked up their first three points of the season at home to Celta Vigo, it's now the Basques who find themselves bottom of the La Liga table after 10 games.

MATCH 2 - ATHLETIC 0-2 BARCELONA

All hail, Jon Driscoll. A perfect 10 points here for picking the right match outcome, exact scoreline and first goalscorer in Lionel Messi - and both Kevin and I also backed the little Argentine to break the deadlock.

Highlights of Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona at the San Mames Stadium

David Phillips went for the goalless draw which didn't work out on this occasion and Rob Palmer also thought Athletic would get a point and Inaki Williams would score first - not to be. Summed up their week, really.

But that Marc-Andre ter Stegen was a standout performer for Barcelona gives a more accurate picture of this game - Athletic seemed more up for it than in recent weeks, so Paulinho's finish late on at the San Mames will have been a real relief to Barca fans.

MATCH 3 - GIRONA 2-1 REAL MADRID

At least I got something out of this match by opting for Isco to open the scoring, while everyone else had picked Cristiano Ronaldo, but no-one predicted a home win, and why would you?

Highlights of Girona's 2-1 win over Real Madrid in La Liga

Still, Girona had drawn with Atletico Madrid on Matchday 1, and only lost narrowly to Villarreal and Sevilla at Montilivi - they seem to like welcoming the big boys to their backyard, and this time they pulled off a historic victory. But this result sent shockwaves through Spanish football.

It's the first time in 59 La Liga games that Real Madrid have lost to a newly-promoted side, and it leaves them all of eight points behind Barcelona. Title defence over? Very possibly.

So all of this means that the overall standings have had another shake-up...

Table

Yes, I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but I am off the bottom of the table, and Rob goes from joint first to last in a fortnight.

Thank you for all your predictions on Twitter. A number of you got two first goalscorers, mainly in the matches at Mendizorrotza and San Mames, but special mention to @MDieg0, @samleveridge and @A_Charterz who got a perfect scoreline somewhere in there too, so 17 points each - a fine effort.
