Kris Boyd was struck by a coin and allegedly subjected to sectarian abuse during Kilmarnock's Scottish Premiership match against Celtic.
The 35-year-old striker was warming up on the touchline when television pictures showed the substitute being hit by the missile.
Boyd is the latest individual to have been involved in such an incident this season, after former Hibernian boss Neil Lennon was struck by a coin and Alfredo Morelos had missiles thrown at him at St Mirren.
An assistant referee required stitches after receiving a cut head after an object was thrown at him during a Premiership meeting between Livingston and Rangers at the Tony Macaroni Arena in October.
Sky Sports summarisers Kris Commons and James McFadden condemned the incident.
"It's unacceptable, Kris has got his opinions and if you want to give him stick that's fine," McFadden said.
"He's a grown man, he likes to give it out and he can take it but to throw coins - there's no place for it. Absolutely no place for it. It's disgusting."
Commons added: "This isn't an isolated incident - this has happened at Livingston, St Mirren, Tynecastle... it needs to be stamped out very, very quickly."
Boyd, who had two spells with Rangers earlier in his career, was also subjected to verbal abuse during the match.
McFadden added: "This season, on the pitch, has been absolutely brilliant for Scottish football.
"And some of the behaviour of a minority of fans is trying to derail that, and spoil it. [There's] absolutely no place for it."
Celtic captain Scott Brown scored a late goal at Rugby Park to earn a 1-0 victory and open up an eight-point lead over Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
