Robins clinch rare victory

Cheltenham Town secured their first win since Boxing Day with a 1-0 victory at Newport County.

A first half goal from Ashley Vincent on his first start for the Robins was enough to secure all three points for Mark Yates' sides. The victory moves the Robins nine points clear of the relegation zone but defeat leaves Newport seven points adrift of the play-off places. Newport had started well at Rodney Parade but Andrew Hughes and Chris Zebroski wasted early chances as they had the visitors under pressure. Vincent gave Cheltenham the lead in the 23rd minute when he bundled home Jermaine McGlashan's cross from close range, his first for Cheltenham since returning for his second spell. Byron Harrison could have doubled their lead shortly before half time but he shot straight at County goalkeeper Elliot Parish after another good counter-attack. County dominated the second half but struggled to find a way past a stubborn Cheltenham defence. Robbie Willmott's long-range effort was as close as they came to getting an equaliser.
