Pilgrims make JPT progress

Image: MacLean: On target for Argyle

Steven MacLean and Craig Noone struck to earn Plymouth a 2-0 win over Cheltenham in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

After a cagey opening, Argyle's opener came in the 10th minute when a loose pass from Robins skipper Michael Pook was pounced on by MacLean, who lifted the ball over the keeper from 22 yards. Noone then saw his shot turned around the post before a powerful run from Dean Parrett ended with his effort being deflected into the arms of keeper Scott Brown. Plymouth doubled their lead two minutes into the second half, Noone finding the top right-hand corner from 25 yards. MacLean forced Brown into another good save on the hour, before the Robins keeper tipped a looping Jack Stephens effort over the crossbar. Injury time saw Brian Smikle glance a header wide but that was as good as it got for the home side.
