Mark Hughes says he is unsure where five minutes of stoppage time came from as his Stoke side conceded late against Man Utd.

Mark Hughes questioned Mark Clattenburg's decision to play five minutes of added time after his Stoke side conceded late against Manchester United.

Wayne Rooney's record-breaking free-kick in the fourth minute of injury time handed United a 1-1 draw after Juan Mata's own goal had Stoke the lead at the bet365 Stadium.

Hughes was proud of his side's efforts as they held United until the death and believes they deserve to be in the top half of the Premier League.

Hughes told Sky Sports: "We're disappointed to lose that right at the end, the fifth minute of extra time. I'm not quite sure where Mark Clattenburg has got that amount of time from, but that's cost us in the end.

"We're doing fine at the moment. We've got back on track, we're in the top half of the league, where we feel our position is, but you have to work hard to maintain that position in a very difficult league, and it's hard to take points off the top six sides this year.

"To run a side with United's resources so close, and in fairness United being really grateful to get something out of the game that looked to be slipping away from them, so we'll take a lot of credit from that.

"We needed a little bit more quality in terms of ball retention, a couple of times we were a little bit frenetic with our passes out, but overall with our effort and what we produced I was fine with it."

Hughes, a former United striker, paid tribute to Rooney, who surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton as United's all-time leading scorer with 250 goals.

"You have to hold your hands up and say what a great goal, I don't know how we could have done anything to stop the goal," Hughes said.

"It takes a player of Wayne Rooney's ability to produce that when they needed it, he's done that throughout his career, and he needed something like that to get them back into the game unfortunately.

As Wayne Rooney broke Bobby Charlton's Manchester United goalscoring record, we take a look back at some of his best in United's colours.

"It's a credit to him, I didn't particularly want it to happen today, but he's been a fantastic player for a long, long time now and the quality of the goal emphasises what an outstanding player he is.

"I think it shows his loyalty to the club as well, to play at that high level for so long is a credit to him."
