Claude Puel felt Southampton deserved a point against Tottenham

Southampton manager Claude Puel felt a point would have been fair for his team after losing 2-1 to Tottenham on Super Sunday.

Spurs' victory came thanks to two first-half goals from Christian Eriksen and a Dele Alli penalty, although James Ward-Prowse reduced the deficit early in the second half.

The loss means Southampton remain 10 in the league on 33 points, with manager Claude Puel insisting his team created their fair share of opportunities at White Hart Lane.

"It's a disappointing moment because a draw would have been right for me," he told Sky Sports after the match.

"It was a strange game with a strange first half. We have taken two goals without real pressure from the opponent. We played a strong game.

"We didn't have a lot of opportunities but that was the same for Tottenham.

"It's frustrating because we can do better, but it was a good game against the team second in the table. A draw would have been right."

Alli scored his 11th goal in 12 Premier League matches from the spot after he was brought down by Steven Davis.

And shortly before half-time, with the Saints 2-0 down, referee Andre Marriner waved away protests of a Southampton penalty when Tadic was clipped by Ben Davies in the box.

Puel believed the referee should have been consistent in awarding his team a penalty, and was unhappy that the Alli spot-kick was awarded when he was trying to bring Shane Long on to replace the injured Manolo Gabbiadini.

He added: "It's the same. We should have this penalty so they can have their penalty as well. It was a strange game with injuries in a bad moment and perhaps there were some decisions which weren't perfect."
