Tony Pulis rued his team's lack of belief after seeing West Brom comprehensively beaten 4-0 by Manchester City.
Doubles from Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan gave Pep Guardiola's men their first win in seven games at The Hawthorns.
Pulis has seen his side struggle against the sides currently at the top end of the Premier League recently and concedes his team needs to step up against bigger names.
He said: "We weren't very good in the first half. The two goals we lost are disappointing goals to concede and I didn't really think we struck a blow.
"For 20 to 25 minutes in the second half we had a right go and we needed a goal but it didn't come and they're always dangerous on the break.
"They're a top team and they do pick through you. We're disappointed. I think it's just a mental approach - you're playing Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City.
"They're three fantastic clubs who will be up and around there at the end of the season but you've got to have that belief.
"We've got enough experience in the team to have that belief but we never really got going until the second half. We needed that goal but it didn't come."
One bright spot for West Brom was the impact substitute Jonathan Leko made when he came on after the break.
The winger helped inspire a better spell of play and Pulis says he is one of a number of young players the club are developing.
He added: "We were pleased with the players who came on, especially Jonathan. I thought he did really well.
"He's a talent. I think that was his fifth appearance and he's only just 17 so he's got a good future. He's just got to keep his feet on the ground.
"For clubs like us, I think we've got to be very cute and astute in the transfer market. We've also got to try to get players through the academy.
"They (the academy) have done well - they've produced some very good young players and we need some more experience and good quality players.
"Over the next three or four years, these kids will come through and they are a good group."
