Steve Bruce starts life as Aston Villa manager with a point after holding local rivals Wolves at Villa Park.

Steve Bruce admits he faces a lot of work to revive Aston Villa's flagging fortunes after his first game as boss ended in a disappointing 1-1 home draw against Wolves.

Bruce saw his new side go in front thanks to Jonathan Kodjia's 15th-minute penalty, but Helder Costa equalised with a spot-kick of his own in the 34th minute and Villa had to ride their luck in the closing stages as Wolves pressed for a winner.

The new Villa manager said: "To be fair their attitude was great and the blocks and saves we made late on in the game you could not fault, but we tired badly which is alarming.

"We had Micah Richards and Tommy Elphick struggling with injuries which affected us. We had to make defensive substitutions which prevented us changing the game.

"It is fair to say that some players could be in better condition, but I have to say that the hardest part of my managerial career is getting over relegation.

"We have now won only four games in 55 which is an alarming statistic. It is my job to find a winning formula and a formula to be successful in the Championship.

Wolves manager Walter Zenga was furious that Wolves were denied a second penalty as his side were held to a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

Zenger said: "We played with spirit and courage even after Villa made it 1-0. In my opinion we played really well.

"You have to understand we have introduced 10 new players, but now after two months the players know what they have to do.

James Chester and Danny Batth give their reaction to Aston Villa's draw with Wolves.

"We now have to continue play in this way and be more consistent. It is a long season, but you do not know what might happen.
