Topman have apologised for and removed from sale a red t-shirt with the number 96 on the back that some viewed as being in reference to the Hillsborough disaster.
Ninety-six Liverpool fans were killed during the 1989 Hillsborough disaster. Many felt the shirt - which also featured the words 'karma' and 'what goes around comes back around' - referred to the disaster, with Alison McGovern, MP for Wirral South, asking for it to be "discontinued ASAP".
Topman say the shirt's design is in reference to a Bob Marley song called 'What Goes Around Comes Around' that was re-released in 1996.
However, following the backlash to the shirt's release, Topman withdrew the item from sale on Thursday night and have issued an apology.
A Topman spokesperson said: "Topman apologises unreservedly for any offence caused by this t-shirt.
"The design was inspired by a Bob Marley track with the number referring to the year of re-release.
"The garment has been removed from sale online and in stores."
