Paul Walsh described Tottenham's performance as a "debacle" following their 1-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino's side's Champions League last-16 hopes were left hanging in the balance after Kevin Kampl's second-half strike inflicted a second successive defeat for Spurs at the national stadium.

The result leaves Tottenham third in Group E behind Leverkusen and Monaco, who they face on November 22 at the Stade Louis II.

"It's definitely the worst performance of the season - the worst I can remember in a long time," Walsh told Sky Sports' Soccer Special.

"I liked the look of the team on paper but in an important game, no one turned up.

"Christian Eriksen was nowhere near his level; he normally gets on the ball and makes things happen with his great delivery but passes went astray and I've never seen Kyle Walker give the ball away so many times. That was the same all over the pitch.

"Moussa Sissoko was so poor; he didn't get a cross in and didn't make a contribution going forward.

"Dele Alli was the only one really who kept going all night but Mousa Dembele had to come off injured, Heung-Min Son hardly got involved and Eric Dier looked like he was low on confidence.

"It's hard to know why, unless over the last few games the confidence has waned a bit and suddenly it's just caught up with them.

"I was expecting Tottenham to win, moving the ball quickly and with confidence, but where's their confidence gone?

"There was not one player in that team tonight playing to 75 per cent of their potential. You can't have eight or nine players doing that over a night in a big game against decent opposition.

"It's hard to explain - Pochettino will be scratching his head, with the ability he's got in that team, over how they could play so badly. It was a bit of a debacle."

Tottenham are on a run of six games without a win in all competitions, with a north London derby against fierce rivals Arsenal at the Emirates up next.

Walsh says Spurs, who have been without injured duo Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld, must raise their level significantly if they are to get anywhere near the Gunners.

"It's not about one player, it's about a team. Harry Kane wasn't particularly at top of his game when he got injured and suddenly we're asking if he's the saviour. It's collective. I'd say Alderweireld being missing - a leader at the back - is more important.

"It's a big game at the weekend. If you're an Arsenal fan watching that you'll be rubbing your hands together.

"The fact it is a derby gives you the chance to roll your sleeves up and raise your game. It's a leveller but Tottenehm will have to raise their level if they're going to get anywhere near Arsenal."
