Netherlands 1-1 Belgium: Yannick Carrasco earns draw for Red Devils

The Netherlands and Belgium played out a 1-1 friendly draw in Amsterdam on Wednesday evening.

Davy Klaassen put the Dutch ahead with a first-half penalty after Jeremain Lens was fouled by Jan Vertonghen, but Yannick Carrasco equalised with eight minutes remaining with a deflected effort from range.

There were concerns from Manchester City as Vincent Kompany pulled out of the starting XI in the warm-up, while Tottenham's Vincent Janssen was substituted for what appeared to be concussion after clashing with Simon Mignolet.

The Netherlands go to Luxembourg in World Cup Qualifying on Sunday, while Belgium host Estonia. 

There were starts for Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard in Roberto Martinez's Belgian side, while Premier League strikers Romelu Lukaku, Michy Batshuayi, Christian Benteke and Divock Origi were all named on the bench.

Kompany was also named a starter but pulled out, though local media reports said the 30-year-old had felt some discomfort during the warm-up and was withdrawn as a precaution.

In a quiet first half, Janssen asked to be substituted after feeling the impact of an earlier 50-50 clash with Liverpool goalkeeper Mignolet.

Dries Mertens headed a superb De Bruyne cross wide early on, but it was more misery for Spurs players later in the half as Vertonghen was penalised for tugging on Lens' shirt in the penalty area.

Ajax midfielder Klaassen, playing at his home ground, stepped up and coolly struck the ball down the middle of the goal for his third Dutch strike.

Belgium, who had most of the ball throughout the contest, pushed after the break, bringing on Lukaku with 25 minutes remaining, but it was the Dutch could have been 2-0 up through young debutant Josh Brenet, who curled the ball inches wide from 20 yards out.

Lukaku then struck inches from the left of the area with 13 minutes left, and then missed a sitter from five yards with an open goal to aim at after Thorgan Hazard had fed him from the right.

But Belgium finally got their equaliser on 82 minutes, Carrasco's effort from 25 yards deflecting off the back of Joel Veltman and looping over Maarten Stekelenburg.

Lukaku missed another close-range effort at the near post after Eden Hazard's cross, before the Chelsea midfielder was then denied when going through one-on-one with Stekelenburg, the goalkeeper he scored twice past for the Blues on Saturday in their 5-0 win over Everton.
