Defending champions cruise past Sudan

Egypt remain firmly on course for the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after a 3-0 victory over Sudan. The defending champions have won both their opening matches in impressive style and had little difficulty against a limited Sudan side, who are pointless after two games in Group C Hosni Abd Rabou, who scored twice in the 4-2 win over Cameroon, was again on target to break the deadlock from the penalty spot. Hosni broke into the box and was felled by goalkeeper Elmuiz Abdalla, who was booked, before stepping up to take responsibility from 12 yards. His first effort found the net low to the keeper's right, only for referee Codja Koffi to order a re-take for encroachment. But Hosni kept his nerve, opting for the opposite corner to give his side a 29th minute lead. Mohamed Zidan came close to adding a second in the 55th minute when he was released by Amr Zaki, but Abdalla got down well to save. Zidan was immediately replaced after suffering a shoulder injury in a heavy challenge as he shaped to shoot. A late brace for substitute Mohamed Aboutrika, who came on for Zidan, then ended any faint hopes Sudan had of taking anything from the match. Egypt broke quickly and Aboutrika fed Amr Zaki, who shaped to shoot before squaring the ball for his team-mate to drill home as Sudan attempted to get men back on the line. And Aboutrika added his second seven minutes from time when he broke into the box on the left and rolled home at the near post as Abdalla stepped out in anticipation of a cross.
