Daniil Kvyat's 2016 season went from bad to worse at the Austrian GP as a huge crash eliminated the young Russian from Q1.
Kvyat, who was demoted from Red Bull back down to Toro Rosso earlier in the campaign, was pushing for time on a flyer at the end of the session when he went wide over the Turn Eight yellow kerbs.
It seemed to be yet another suspension failure, this time on the right-rear, in Spielberg as Kvyat's car span into the wall in a nasty shunt, meaning the session to be red-flagged. However, the Toro Rosso driver was perplexed by the crash.
"I don't know what happened," he told Sky F1. "The suspension broke, very weird. Once it broke it just steered me to the right. After a puncture earlier, we have lots of things to investigate."
"The one that was on the kerb didn't break, the one that was off the kerb didn't. You're not in control once you're on them. If the suspension breaks, you're not in control any more and that's not very cool."
Nico Rosberg and Sergio Perez also suffered similar suspension issues on Saturday, and Kvyat's team principal Franz Tost added: "He needed that lap so he had to risk it."
Kvyat was also critical of the Red Bull Ring after the accident:
"They wanted to make it better but they actually made it worse. The track limits is a issue. The kerbs are very dangerous."
As a young driver under pressure, such an accident and Q1 elimination was exactly what Kvyat didn't need.
"That could be curtains for his Red Bull experience by the end of this season," Sky F1's Martin Brundle said.
Q1 was a session to forget for Toro Rosso, with Carlos Sainz then suffering an engine blow-up after the restart.
