But the strangest retirement of the day? That surely has to be Sergey Sirotkin's. The rookie may not have been in the reckoning for points, but the reasoning for his DNF really does beggar belief.
"Our provisional analysis is that a plastic bag has been collected on the circuit, completely blocking the brake cooling, so that the right rear corner caught fire and eventually failed the hydraulics circuit," said Williams technical chief Paddy Lowe.
